Geographically linked to the Indian world, Sri Lanka has freed itself from it over the course of history. The Sinhalese, who came from northern India, and the Tamils, who came from the south, made this Indian Ocean island the crucible of a brilliant and original civilization. While Buddhism has all but disappeared from India, Sri Lanka is the heartland of Hinayana Buddhism, and religious tolerance is a major trait of the Sri Lankan population. Ancient cities, white sandy beaches, wildlife, tea plantations, lush vegetation and the warm welcome of the Sri Lankan people make "l'île resplendissante", the literal translation of "Sri Lanka", one of the most beautiful destinations you can dream of.
