After Peter Pan, presented in November 2023 at Athéna, Théâtre Amer returns with a new adaptation: William Shakespeare's King Lear.

The spirit of the troupe blows through this King Lear. Mathieu Coblentz, surrounded by a dozen actors and musicians with whom he shares his artistic universe, takes on this immense text to deliver an epic version of the Shakespearean tragedy. Set in an ancient world where Great Britain was still called the Isle of Brittany, the actors and actresses embody the story of a king who sowed chaos out of pride.

On an uncluttered stage, with text and acting as the main backdrop, the families of Lear, Cornwall, Albany and Gloucester tear each other apart, all hoping to get their share of the kingdom. When the masks come off, betrayal and madness take center stage, revealing a central question: how do we deal with the gaps and chasms created by a family curse?

Centuries after King Lear was written, human mechanisms seem to respond to the same impulses. Abominable at first glance, the characters are viewed through the prism of ambiguity by Mathieu Coblentz. By reflecting the deformed face of our society, don't they ultimately serve to warn us against the greed and monstrosity born of the exercise of power and domination?
