Houat's little sister has experienced much the same history. Taken and recaptured by the English, Hoëdic boasts a fort now owned by the Conservatoire du Littoral. There's a lot to preserve on this 2.5 km long island. Dune carnations, sea lilies, relics of history and memories of island lifestyles. In the mid-19th century, the first port, Port de la Croix, was built by the entire island community, including women and children, without outside help. Since 1973, it has been complemented by the port of Argol on the north coast, which today welcomes boats providing links with the mainland, as well as the island's professional fishing fleet and pleasure boats. The installation of a pontoon at Argol in 2011 has opened up new prospects for fishermen and pleasure boaters, with port services being strengthened year on year and visitor numbers rising sharply.
