Having fallen out of favor with the Queen of Spain, Don Salluste seeks revenge. To this end, he forces his valet, Ruy Blas, to pose as a nobleman in order to gain access to the young queen. Secretly in love with her, Ruy Blas agrees. Having risen to a position of power, he uses his intelligence for the good of the state and seeks to put an end to corruption. But Salluste’s Machiavellian plan is closing in…
This central work of the repertoire, first performed in 1879 at the Comédie-Française, has not been staged there for twenty-five years.
It is directed by Julie Duclos, who aims to capture the full scope of this Romantic masterpiece: moving from drama to comedy, from the concrete to the lyrical, without ever losing sight of the fact that a man’s life is at stake.
Running time: 170 minutes / Director: Julie Duclos / Playwright: Victor Hugo
