Tuna Boat Museum
An iconic fishing port from 1850 to 1970, Etel owes its fame to its fishermen, who braved the ocean to catch sardines, tuna, and other prized species. These valiant seafarers now have their own sanctuary: the Tuna Boat Museum.
Picturesque and authentic, the museum movingly recounts the epic history of the region’s seafarers. It is a community-run cultural site dedicated to showcasing the region’s maritime heritage.
As you wander among the models, maritime artifacts, and period reenactments, you’ll discover life in the harbor and among its sailors, fishing-related activities, and sea rescue operations, as well as canneries, shipbuilding, and life in the hinterland with its windmills, tide mills, and the little coastal train…
This distinctive museum, much like the Etel River itself, is a source of inspiration for the many artists who exhibit there. Situated at the crossroads of different regions, it’s also a great starting point for exploring other remarkable sites in the surrounding area (the Barre d’Etel, Île de St Cado, the Pays d’Auray, Carnac-Quiberon, and Lorient).
+ In July and August, explore the museum on a weekly guided tour led by passionate local guides. Reservations can be made at the museum.
+ For children, various play areas are available for ages 4 and up.
+ Temporary art exhibitions (painting, photography, sculpture) are updated every two months, with regular contributions from Official Painters of the Navy.
