In Locmariaquer, retired physics teacher Gérard Le Merdy continues his "History of Science" series.
For this new series, he has chosen to highlight some of history's great names.
Antoine Lavoisier was a French chemist, philosopher and economist, born in Paris on August 26, 1743, and guillotined in the same city on May 8, 1794.
He is often presented as the father of modern chemistry, which developed from the foundations and notions he established, and from a new demand for precision offered by the instruments he developed.
He inaugurated the scientific method, both experimental and mathematical, in a field which, unlike mechanics, seemed destined to escape it.
