"Can a choice be rational? "
"When we are torn between contrary feelings, we see the best and follow the worst" Spinoza, Ethics, book 3, proposition 2, scolie
Choices are necessarily determined by a certain number of factors, variables, parameters, but also by our reason, or our feeling. Making a decision is often a challenge, sometimes a routine, but in all cases, we want to make the right choices.
However, as Spinoza points out, most of the time people believe themselves to be free, and thus justify their tendency to acrasia. Rationality seems to be what characterizes the ability to make the best of choices, what enables us to avoid acrasia, doing the worst while knowing the best. But where does this certainty of the best decision come from? Is this certainty rational? By Anastasie Crol.
