A family affair" exhibition
Exhibition “A Family Affair”: Photographic Archives and the Menhirs of Carnac.
“Do you have a photo of yourself or someone in your family at the Carnac Alignments? Can you date the photo? We’d love to see it!” Originally intended to maintain a connection with followers of the Carnac Alignments Facebook page during the lockdown, the collection of souvenir photos began in March 2020 via that social media platform.
Running through 2022, this “collection” yielded an especially large number of submissions: more than 250 photographs were submitted, ranging from 1920 (the oldest) to 2022 (the most recent). But what to do with this treasure trove after sharing one or two photos each week on the Alignments page?
The families who took part in the project all quickly embraced the idea of an exhibition at the Maison des Mégalithes in Carnac.
Enriched by feature articles written by several contributors—Dominique Sellier, Olivier Agogué, François de l’R, and Jarne Da Silva, the exhibition “A Family Affair” explores a variety of topics ranging from the history of photography to traditional Breton costume and the fragility of archaeological sites, among others. These are all testaments to the unsuspected richness of the “souvenir photo” as a source of information on the very identity of megalithic monuments and their history. As such, additional work is underway to further study and highlight this inexhaustible body of popular imagery. A “family history” worth following, then!
At the Maison des Mégalithes.
Free admission.
Through June 2027.
