Lecture: The Neolithic and Contemporary Art
Lecture by Rémi Labrusse, École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, organized by the Friends of the Carnac Museum.
Environmental concerns and the questioning of the ideology of progress are leading us today, increasingly to envision, dream of, or even dread a departure from modernity—whether in apocalyptic terms or, on the contrary, in the hope of reinventing our relationship with the Earth. Often, in this context, the Neolithic is invoked: are we at the end of the Neolithic, with techno-industrial societies representing its ultimate and catastrophic consequence? In other words, are we currently experiencing a rupture as fundamental as the one that seems to have distinguished the Paleolithic from the Neolithic—hunter-gatherers from farmers and herders? These questions are increasingly permeating the contemporary arts: both major and lesser-known works of our time thus contribute directly to collective thought, giving it form and driving it forward—as I will endeavor to demonstrate in the second part of this lecture.
