Music and Literature Lecture: “Between Words and the Sacred: Francis POULENC, Monk and Rogue” by Emilie De Fautereau
Emilie De Fautereau, an agrégée and Ph.D. in literature, is also a musician. She conducts research focused on literary and musical criticism. This lecture will focus on a figure from cultural life: Francis Poulenc.
At times lighthearted, Francis Poulenc’s music is the kind whose depth is not always immediately apparent. “Monk and rogue”: that is how his contemporary, Claude Rostand, described him. This dual nature runs through his entire body of work: the poems of Apollinaire and Éluard, which he set to music with inimitable tenderness, as well as the plays of his lifelong friend Jean Cocteau, but also a deeply moving, sacred vein born of personal tragedy.
