The Art of Words: Ty Tom, A Musical Tale Between Land and Sea
"Ty Tom," a musical tale by Cédric Hergault of the La Goulotte theater company
Young Ty Tom doesn’t quite feel at ease in his boots; he dreams of setting off on an adventure but doesn’t dare step out of his shell. From his little port in the west, he watches the ships go by and endures his friends’ teasing about his small stature. His mother keeps a watchful eye on him and arranges a meeting with an extraordinary character, Tas de Foin—a whaling ship captain by trade—who will take him on a marvelous journey.
Through his adventures, he’ll learn to discover a world he didn’t know existed, revealing himself to others and to himself. Isn’t opening up to the world often the answer to so many problems?
Cédric Hergault moves seamlessly from sampler to guitar, from percussion to comedy. With *Ty Tom*, he presents a true theatrical piece that is both told and sung. He portrays Ty Tom, his mom, the big Tas de Foin, and Madeleine the Fairy with a tone that is both funny and sensitive. The way “Ty Tom” is written allows both children and adults to understand the show in their own way. Everyone will be able to see themselves reflected in the story of this tender, clumsy little man who also knows how to be daring at times.
